SUBJECTS TO BE TAKEN SIMULTANEOUSLY

Seminar VII

SUBJECT DESCRIPTION

The professors of this subject are Marcos García Jerez, Stéphanie Horel, Mercè Kirchner Baliu and Eduard Soler Lecha.

This subject, along with Seminar VII, constitutes the core of Module IV. The main goal of the subject is to guarantee the development of curricular internships in a public or private institution, national or international, in the field of International Relations.

The internship will allow the student to acquire a global understanding of the professional activity in this field, and the different professional profiles and working dynamics operating in the International Relations sector.

The professor/tutor of Seminar VII is the professor for this subject, and consequently, the academic tutor for the Internship period. The tutor will advice the student to identify the academic and professional interests and aptitudes, will monitor and assess the internship and will help the student to improve his or her professional profile.

COMPETENCES

  • Being able to use ICTs as basic and common working tools, and take advantage of their possibilities when developing different activities in the IR’s field

  • Being able to work with autonomy, initiative and organizational abilities, in order to reach a full intellectual development.

  • Being able to address different risks and challenges and to assume the responsibilities and consequences resulting from taking their own decisions.

  • Being able to co-operate with other colleagues in order to reach common goals, by the means of joining the existing working teams or by the means of creating new ones.

  • Being able to adapt to conceptual, instrumental and working innovations, as a result of the received training.

  • Being able to adapt to the different work dynamics in the specific field of IR.

  • Being able to act in an effective way in the field of IR, under specific legal and ethical requirements, and implementing the skills and contents acquired during the learning period.

Learning outcomes:

  • Apply the training received to the correct professional performance in the field of International Relations.

  • Know and master the practical skills that involve the professional exercise of International Relations.

CONTENTS

The student will put into practice the theoretical and practical content and competences acquired during the previous three years in a specific professional environment.

The internship vacancies offered by the department provide coverage to the plural and diverse spectrum of institutions and professional profiles in this field: International Organizations, NGOs, Foreign Affairs Offices, Think tanks and research centers, companies, etc.

The student can carry out his/her internship in an institution in Barcelona, Spain, or abroad, without this having an effect on his/her performance in the rest of the subjects.

METHODOLOGY

The internship will be carried out at the same time as seminar VII. This will allow the students to share their professional experiences with the rest of the group and to apply the specific professional competencies in the field of International Relations: intercultural understanding, international tendering, community management in IR, etc.

The students will have two tutors during the internship: one at the University and one at the host institution. The academic tutor will be the same tutor as seminar VII, which will allow a coherent monitoring and evaluation of the training process. The tutor at the host institution will be in charge of defining a training program, coaching the student and giving him/her advice at any time. There will be fluent communication between both tutors during the internship period.

The student will be asked to deliver a final written report, summarizing the internship experience.

EVALUATION

The final grade will be based in the assessment provided by the institution's tutor (60%) and the one proposed by the tutor of the seminar VII (40%). Both tutors will provide a brief report to assess the student performance in different dimensions: professional competencies, motivation, attitudinal aspects, etc.

CRITERIA OF EVALUATION OF RESULTS

Both tutors will provide a brief report to assess the student performance in different dimensions: professional competencies, motivation, attitudinal aspects, etc.
