SUBJECT DESCRIPTION

It is a theoretical and a workshop course that initiates the students in the mechanisms of the graphic concept, the project methodology and the realisation of pieces in visual communication. It studies the instrumental paper of the design in the specific fields of professional communication.

Graphic design is an useful language in all activities of visual communication: informative, educational, persuasive arguments and entertainment. The course wants to introduce the students in the foundations of graphic design to understand which is the paper of this discipline in the media.

The masterclasses works the theoretical foundations of the design and develops a project, that emulates a real professional project, to boost the learning of the work in team, develop the creativity and purchase skills in the formalization as the argumentative of projects.

At the Formative Unit classes students realise practical exercises to purchase the basic skills of graphic design under the orientation of the theacher, and develop learning to facilitate the use of the digital tools of self-publishing: vectorial drawings, treatments of texts and creation of digital images.

COMPETENCES

a) To know fields of application in graphic design and his paper in the frame of visual communication and media.

b) Introduce on the language, methods, processes and use of the own tools of graphic designers. 

c) Improve the command of visual and argumentative skills.

d) Organization of professional graphic design projects and presentation techniques. 

e) Initiate in  research, analysis and interpretation of information, as a previous step in any graphic project. 

f) Start the students in the technicians of self-publishing to be able to design projects of visual communication and boosting self-learning of the computer programs (Indesign or Illustrator and Photoshop).


CONTENTS

1. Introduction to graphic design culture:

1.1. What is design: graphic design and communication.

1.2. Skilled fields of graphic design: from the publishing design to advertising design.

2. Foundations of graphic design:

2.1. Typography.

2.2. Colour.

2.3. Composition.

2.4. Image rhetorics.

3. Development of a graphic design project:

3.1. The processes and methodologies of the design projects.

3.2. The graphic conceptualization.

3.3. The corporate visual identity as a project.

3.4. Presentation and formal techniques of a project.

4. A look to the evolution of the styles of graphic design:

4.1. The schools and the pioneers in graphic design.

4.2. The aesthetic tendencies.

4.3. The technological changes.

METHODOLOGY

The contents of the graphic design subject give through:

a) School classes with the visual support of contemporary graphic design projects and the view of audiovisual products.

b) Individual exercises in class, following a guide and the supervision of the teacher.

c) Individual exercises out of class.

d) Presentations in class.

e) Preparation and realisation of exams.

Regarding the Formative Unit, will give in shape of workshop at the digital design laboratory. Will facilitate the computer program tutorials (Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop) to promote students to self-learning, and will answer in class questions relative to the program applications for self-publishing the exercises.

Along the sessions will practise in the creation of sketches, reticular organisation, definition of colour paletts, realisation of vectorial drawings, collage and photo-compositions… worked through:

a) Individual and group exercises in class.

b) Individual and group exercises out of class.

c) Individual and group presentations in class.

EVALUATION

General evaluation:

Overall rating: 

The overall grade for the course is the relationship of four partial notes: 

1 General Block (50%): 

A. Final exam (35%) 

B. Evaluation of active participation in class (15%) 

2 Formative Unit (50%):

C. Completion of a project team, presentation and final delivery (25%) 

D. Evaluation of individual and final delivery of a Dossier (25%). 


Students must separately approve mandatory 2 blocks that make up the course evaluation: Formative General Block and Unity as well as the 2 parts that make up the Training Unit (Project Dossier and exercise). 

In the Training Unit, by nature of the workshop, the teacher / a will track how much of the project group of individual exercises. 

It takes the student to participate in this follow-up and attend both classes and workshop classes UF as Gen. block at least 70% for evaluation of the entire course.


a) First announcement:

If the student suspends any of the three blocks of evaluation (theoretical examination, group project and final UF folder), only will have to recover the part of pending evaluation through a new theoretical examination, a new project (now individual) and a practical examination (in case of UF).

If the student does not present to any of the three blocks of evaluation (theoretical examination, group project and final UF folder) in the first announcement, his note will be of NO PRESENTED and the complete course will remain suspended, not being able to present to the second announcement and, in consequence, have to repeat it the following course.

b) Second announcement:

If it does not achieve recover the part or the parts suspended in the second announcement, the subject will remain suspended in his whole: for the following course the student will have to enrol of all the course, and go back to examine of the three parts of evaluation.

Once approved the parts of the course, will do the arithmetical average according to the percentages indicated previously. So much in the first as in the second announcement.

CRITERIA OF EVALUATION OF RESULTS

Goal 1 

Students must demonstrate knowledge of the fields of application of graphic design and its role in the context of visual communication [A, B, C, D]. 

Goal 2 

Introductions in the language, methods, processes and use of the proper tools

of graphic designers [A, B, C, D]. 

Goal 3 

Enhance the visual domain and argumentative, oral and written skills [A, B, C, D]. 

Goal 4 

Start students in the techniques and application of desktop publishing programs to design visual communication projects [B, C, D].
